One of my recent games that I played was Star Wars: Outlaws. it was good. Not great, but good. I would describe it as a fairly typical Ubisoft game that benefitted from having the Star Wars Universe to play in. It included familiar places like Tatooine and Mos Eisley and had enough references to in-universe canon to make it feel connected.

That having been said, while playing it, I took a liking to the blaster the main character, Kay Vess, uses throughout the game. You can change the skin on the gun, but it’s still the same gun. I thought it’d be a fun project to make a prop for.

After searching around, I found a model of the gun which seemed like it would print well. I decided to print in PLA on my FDM printer. As you can see in the final product, you can still see evidence of layer lines, but it was big enough I wasn’t sure I wanted to try on the resin printer. Plus, I figured for a blaster-sized print, the layer lines wouldn’t be the main issue.

Largely, I was right. The two main issues I have with the result are the layer lines and I wasn’t really happy with the chrome that I achieved on the main part of the gun. I suspect that’s a side-effect of the layers lines and I probably didn’t demonstrate the requisite amount of patience required to get smooth so the chrome really looks like chrome.

The blaster was a reasonable size for me and my hand, which surprised me a bit (I have big hands), but the grip for the model was very deep from front to back and very flat, which made for a not great grip.

One thing I did do which I think helps sell it is that instead of the 3d-printed screws, I drilled those out and used real pan-head hex screws in black which I think looked better than the modeled versions. Plus, I did a decent grime pass to make it look used instead of brand new and shiny.

Here’s the result:
