{"id":145,"date":"2009-07-13T19:17:37","date_gmt":"2009-07-14T03:17:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mossor.org\/blog\/?p=145"},"modified":"2009-07-13T19:17:37","modified_gmt":"2009-07-14T03:17:37","slug":"vocabulary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mossor.org\/blog\/vocabulary\/","title":{"rendered":"Vocabulary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s good to learn new things.\u00a0 It keeps us fresh, keeps us from getting complacent.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that is true of moving not only to a new job, but a new job in an entirely new domain, is that there will be plenty of new things to learn.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s observation relates to vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s probably true that every group larger than four starts to create a unique vocabulary.\u00a0 It&#8217;s certainly true when you move from one company to another and even more so if you move to a new industry.<\/p>\n<p>With my new job, I get to learn a new industry as well as a new host of TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms) and vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read entire emails where while I recognize each and every individual word, I have no bloody idea what the author is talking about.\u00a0 That&#8217;s scary!<\/p>\n<p>And then, if you like words, occasionally you simply get to learn a new word and its usage.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite new word for the week is: <strong>Idempotent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen it used three times in the last two weeks and, to the best of my knowledge, have never seen the word before that.<\/p>\n<p>I had to look it up on <a title=\"Idempotent Definition\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Idempotent\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>.\u00a0 No, I&#8217;m not going to explain it here because they do a better job of explaining it there.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out it has an application in software as well which I&#8217;d never been exposed to before and was not clear from the context.<\/p>\n<p>New things to learn!\u00a0 Life is good!\u00a0 Now to use it in a sentence&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I have a sex change operation and then have another one, I&#8217;ll be back where I started,&#8221; he observed idempotently.<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm.\u00a0 See, that&#8217;s funnier <em>after<\/em> you read the Wikipedia article.\u00a0 But not much.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s good to learn new things.\u00a0 It keeps us fresh, keeps us from getting complacent.
